First Opportunity
Serving 11-15 year old Folwell Middle School students who are experiencing difficulties in school
Give a Child their First Opportunity.
First Opportunity is an early-intervention program that provides a strong support system for youth to increase academic success and deter delinquent behavior. The program provides year-round activities including educational support, work experience, community service, worksite mentoring, peer leadership, social activities, home visits and family case management.
Participating youth must attend Folwell Middle School and be referred by school staff or a parent or guardian, and be experiencing difficulty in school (for example, truancy, low grades, or acting out in class).
Summer community service
Each year First Opportunity participants have their first chance to work and earn money while giving back to their community. Youth are involved in a variety of community service activities including:
- Child care assistant
- Hospital volunteer
- Office assistant
- Food shelf assistant
- Tutoring assistant
